Have You Heard of the Tummy Tub?

our 4 month old daughter
A few months ago I got my hands on a Tummy Tub. It kind of looks like a big punch bowl, except it is a baby bath which is supposedly good from birth to 3 years.
According to their site, “The Tummy Tub is designed to replicate the comfort of the mother’s womb and once in the Tummy Tub, babies naturally adopt the fetal position and instantly feel reassured and relaxed. Created in Holland, the Tummy Tub has been endorsed by maternity hospitals, physicians, midwives throughout Europe.”
I have to admit that I wasn’t so impressed with the looks of the Tub, and kept it in storage until our daughter seemed sturdy enough to use it. She is a real peanut, and only 11 lbs at 4 months. My whole opinion changed the minute I put our 4 month old in the tub. She was so… happy, calm and so… darn cute.
The other day, our daughter was so unhappy. She is teething and miserable, and nothing could calm her down. I decided to try the Tummy Tub again, and the minute we immersed her, she stopped crying and was comfortable.
This Tub is definitely worth the $40 it retails for.
Babyproofing TVs, Bookcases and Bulky Furniture
Last Summer I remember hearing about three toddlers in NYC who were killed when they were crushed by a television. Children love to climb and pull on things. Parents need to make sure that while they are babyproofing, that their TV’s, bookcases, dressers, appliances etc, are sturdy and that there is no chance of it tipping over.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) staff estimates that in 2006, 16,300 children 5 years old and younger were treated in emergency rooms because of injuries associated with TV, furniture, and appliance tip-overs, and between 2000 and 2006, CPSC staff received reports (pdf) of 134 tip-over related deaths. Additionally, CPSC staff is aware of at least 30 media reports of tip-over deaths since January 2007 involving this same age group.
To help prevent tip-over hazards, Baby Bodyguards offers the following safety tips:
- Furniture should be stable on its own. For added security, anchor chests or dressers, TV stands, bookcases and entertainment units to the floor or attach them to a wall. The
- The largest heaviest books should be placed on the bottom of a bookcase
- Place TVs on a sturdy, low-rise base and anti-tip the TV. Avoid flimsy shelves.
- Push the TV as far back as possible.
- Place electrical cords out of a child’s reach, and teach kids not to play with them.
- Keep remote controls and other attractive items off the TV stand so kids won’t be tempted to grab for them and risk knocking the TV over.
- Make sure free-standing ranges and stoves are installed with anti-tip brackets. They are provided by the manufacturer
We at Baby Bodyguards care about your child’s safety. Please contact us if you have any questions about how to anti-tip on your own, or if you would like us to send a technician to do it for you.
The Coolest Baby Product of 2010…The mamaRoo!!!
I just received our mamaRoo, made by 4moms. I have been anxiously awaiting it’s arrival for weeks, and it was worth it. Last night when my 3 week old was up from 4am to 6am, I kept thinking, when is my mamaRoo going to arrive. HOORAY!!
This is the COOLEST most AMAZING product I have ever seen for babies. It’s not a swing or a bouncer, it is a futuristic “baby spacecraft” that moves like mom. It has 5 unique motions: car ride, kangaroo, tree swing, rock-a bye, and ocean wave. Our daughter loves the car ride, and I love not actually having to be out in the middle of the night driving around a colicky baby. Each motion can be adjusted to the right speed for your baby. The mamaRoo also comes with 5 sounds of nature, but what I love most is that you can connect your MP3 player to it .
If exposing baby to wonderful music isn’t enough, the mamaRoo also comes with Plush toy balls decorated in the style of Van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat. Black and white on one side for infants. Color on the other side for older babies. They easily pop in and out of the mobile so babies can chew and or study them.
This is a must have for every new parent. It’s worth the splurge at $200. It is a reasonable price considering you can take that swing and bouncer off your registry.
New Baby New Breastpump

Our new Baby Bodyguards’s baby was born on April 19th 9:40 pm. After spending the day at a children’s carnival with our son, I went to take a nap, and POP! my water broke. Off to the hospital we went, and 31 hours, 3 pushes later, out little girl was born.
I researched breastpumps before the birth, because I used the Medela Pump in Style, with our first baby, and although it worked just fine in the beginning, I felt it fizzled out after a while and after calling the hotline and replacing all the membranes, and tubing etc, still no luck. I was kind of dismayed to then realize it only had a 1 year warranty.
I wanted to try something new, and that is when I came across Enjoye by Hygeia. I contacted them and they sent me a pump to test out for this blog post.
The Enjoye is a hospital grade pump and has some pretty cool and unique features such as:
- Proven performance for working moms with long-term and frequent pumping needs. Plus, your satisfaction is guaranteed
- Usually more affordable than other rental pumps
- More portable and convenient than other rental pumps
- Features the unique Hygeia CARE Button for Customized, Audio, Recording, Experience so you can record your baby or other sound to enhance your breastpumping experience
- Offers single or double pumping flexibility
- Electric or battery operation with the included internal battery pack. The rechargeable battery is ideal for battery-dependent pumpers
- Green Breastpump, Can be shared by multiple mothers when each has her own personal accessory set
- Recycle the EnJoye when you no longer need it. See recycling instructions.
- Mimics your baby’s unique suckling patterns with customizable speed and pressure controls
- Safe, because all parts that come into contact with breastmilk are
BPA/DEHP Free
I was very pleased to learn about Hygeia’s 3 year warranty. That is one of the longest in the industry.
I have used the Enjoye twice so far, and so far so good. I am able to get just as much milk as with the Pump in Style in it’s glory days, but find the suction action to be a lot more comfortable and similar to my babies feeding pattern.
The Enjoye is also very reasonable priced, between $219 and $299, and very lightweight.
I have only used this pump twice, but it is off to an awesome start. I will be updating again to let you all know how this pans out.

Deaths Linked to Baby Slings
(This originally was posted Wednesday March 10th, 2010 however due to our recent move to a green hosting company the database backup did not catch the last post so we’re re-posting this today, Monday March 15th 2010)
With the clock ticking and our new Baby Bodyguard family member arriving in a few weeks, I have been trying to decide whether to use a sling, a wrap or a carrier. When we had our first baby, I had registered for the Infantino “Slingrider” that was then recalled because of a defect with the ring that the fabric goes through. I had filled out the product registration card (duh) when I got he sling, was quickly informed of the recall and was sent a new sling immediately. I think I used the sling once. Our son was a Winter baby and I didn’t walk around much, plus he got so heavy so fast!
News broke today that there are going to be new warnings on Infant Slings after more and more deaths and injuries have been linked to their usage. CPSC is mostly concerned about the so called “bag style” sling that wraps around the adult’s neck and then “cradles the child” in what it described as a “curved or ‘C-like’ position,” which has the baby resting below the chest near the belly. Apparently, the curve is what can cause infants’ heads—and infants have minimal head and neck strength—to droop forward with their chins falling on their chests, which restricts the infants breathing
Hmmmm, I think I’ll check out the Ergo or the Bjorn, it’s not worth the worry

Is Baby Bodyguards a Luxury Service? Hmmm
Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with an old friend and checking out the Brooklyn Flea. I highly recommend it, the best part was the grilled cheese sandwich from Milk Truck.
While perusing around, we got into a heated debate about whether Baby Bodyguards is a luxury service meant for CEO’s and celebrities. My dear friend who shall remain nameless, seems to think we are, and that our prices are too low for what we offer and the clientele we are servicing.
While it is true that we have serviced celebrities such as most recently, Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, as well as top Broadway producers, some De Niro’s, CEO’s, and many of the world’s top hedge fund managers, we also have our fair share of teachers, nurses, lawyers and 9 to 5 employees who take advantage of our services because they understand that babyproofing is not optional, it is a necessity!
When we came up with the idea for Baby Bodyguards, we wanted child safety to be something affordable to everyone. 1 in 4 children suffers an accidental injury in the home requiring an ER visit, and this is unacceptable to us.
My friend and I then started discussing whether babyproofing is something that most can do on their own. Yes, it is, so is changing your water heater, but I wouldn’t want to do that on my own. We have babyproofed hundreds of homes in the past few years so when we walk into a home, the dangers are very obvious to us. Plus, we have all of our tools handy as well as the safety devices and in a matter of hours everything is done. Our clients can spend the weekend with their family doing fun things instead of reading manuals, going back and forth to hardware stores, and Buy Buy Baby trying to get done what we get done in a matter of hours.
So, after giving this lots of thought, my conclusion is that yes, we service the rich and famous but we also service those that aren’t. The one thing our clients all have in common is they want the best for their baby and with our prices being within everyone’s reach they can have the best in safety and convenience.
After all, this is New York……
The Infant Tub of All Infant Tubs
With baby # 2 expected this April, I have been on a quest to find the latest and greatest of baby gear, that wasn’t around a few years ago when our son was born. My nesting instinct has kicked in, and last weekend, while cleaning out our basement, I came across our old mediocre infant tub, that was all dirty and worn. I added infant tub to my list of must haves for our new bundle of joy.
Boy was I surprised how the infant tub has changed! There are Spa Tubs, Euro Tubs, Foam Tubs, etc etc. The tub that caught my eye as the Tub of all Tubs is The Cleanwater Infant Tub by 4Moms. Their slogan is “if you spent a day in diapers, you’d want one too.” Brilliant!
The Cleanwater Infant Tub comes equip with a built in thermometer, rinse cup and clean water reservoir. There is hole in the side of the tub, so that cold, dirty water can drain out, while clean and perfectly warm water can flow in.
The tub is suitable for up to 25 lbs or babies up to 6 months old. Once a baby can sit up, this tub has run its course. It fits in single and double basin sinks.
We had Susan from Baby Bodyguards, try it out with her 3 month old, and she said it was “so cool and easy to use” , she really liked the built in thermometer feature.
The Cleanwater Infant Tub is available at stores like Babies R Us, Target, as well as smaller specialty stores. You can enter your zip code on the site and it will tell you the store nearest you. The tub retails for about $40.
