Best New Invention For New Parents

As the Co-Founder of Baby Bodyguards,  National Safety Expert, American Heart Association CPR Instructor and Mother of 3 small children, I am always on the look out for products that will help save the lives of babies and give parents peace of mind and comfort at the same time. A lot of  products that I come across are unnecessary , create a false sense of security or just seem to prey on the fears of new sleep deprived parents. Recently, I have come across a product that is incredible and worth every penny. It is called the Owlet owletand is already saving lives.

The Owlet is a sock that goes on babies foot and monitors their heart rate and oxygen levels while they sleep using pulse oximetry. The Owlet is designed to alert you if your baby stops breathing. If the baby stops breathing you will get an alert on your phone as well as an independent base station. It is reasonably priced at $250 and available on their website.

Not Happy With My New Harness to Booster Safety 1st Seat

I usually only write about products I like and stay away from negative reviews, but after my recent finger numbing experience trying to install our 3.5 year olds new Safety 1st Summit Deluxe Booster Seat into my mother’s 2014 Honda CRV, I want to scream out of frustration. I purchased the seat after reading dozens of positive reviews on What I never gave thought to was the fact that most seats are installed incorrectly. Just because people rave about how easy it is to install, does not mean it is installed right.
I wanted a moderately priced harness to booster seat for the SUV, because our daughter is hardly even in it. In my own car I have the Britax Pioneer 70 and LOVE…. it!!!! When the snow fell and we needed to take a family trip to Lowes, I attempted to install the seat. A nice feature is you don’t have to thread the shoulder straps to get them in the right position, but you do have to uninstall the seat to lift a bar up in the back to make sure the straps were right above or at the shoulders. This is pretty inconvenient, especially given the fact that the seat doesn’t have a built in lock off, allowing you to clip the belt tightly.  Without the lock-off, I was left trying to wrestle the seat to get it in tightly. I never could get it tight enough. This has never happened to me.
My husband and I are both CPST’s (Certified Passenger Safety Technicians) and my husband couldn’t get the seat tight either. This hardly ever happens!!! The straps are flimsy and tend to twist. I’m so bummed that I threw away the box because I wish I could return the seat.
I get asked a lot about seat recommendations and I always tell parents that the seats in the US are all crash tested to the same specifications. What it comes down to is how easy it is to install. A seat is only safe if it is installed correctly. Safety 1st SummitMy husband was right, I should have spent the extra $100 and gotten a Britax.

The Book That Needs to Be in Every Diaper Bag

On Friday, we participated in a Safety Event at the new MOM Museum in NYC. We got to mingle and share stories with many other companies sharing our passion for keeping babies out of harms way. I had the pleasure of meeting Tara Summers-Hermann, a nurse and mom who wrote two fabulous books about child safety, Baby MEDBASICS and Toddler MEDBASICS.

Tara was inspired to write the MEDBASICS series after she had to save her own toddler’s life, when he was choking on a piece of potato. After 5 or 6 abdominal thrusts, the potato flew out of his mouth and he started to breathe. Tara couldn’t imagine what would have happened if a non-medical professional was in the same situation. She set out on a journey to eduacate parents and caregivers, so they will always have easy to follow  instructions on how to respond to an emergency at their fingertips.

The books are very easy to read, and are designed to be read by a person whose adrenaline is pumping and needs immediate instruction. The average ambulance response time in the US is 8 minutes, brain damage from lack of oxygen begins in 4 minutes and death shortly thereafter, these books can make the difference in the outcome during an emergency situation.

Baby Bodyguards Reviews the Clek Oobr

We are constantly receiving child safety seats to try out and review. Recently we received the Oobr fullback booster seat. Upon opening the box, I was very impressed by the looks of this luxury booster. It reminded me somewhat of a modern airline seat. I wonder if that is what the folks at Clek had in mind. The fullback booster can also convert to a backless booster.

A unique feature of the Oobr booster is that it is equipped with LATCH anchors. The anchors don’t make the booster seat any safeer as far as installation and protecting your child, but they serve to protect you when your child is not in their seat. When using a Booster without your child sitting in it, you should always buckle the seat belt anyway, so in case you are involved in a crash the seat doesn’t become a projectile. The LATCH anchors protect you from this scenario and keep the seat in a stable position.

Oobr Safety Highlights

  • Raises your child 4 in./10 cm. to improve in-vehicle shoulder belt fit
  • Better positions the seat belt on the child’s hips to improve safety
  • Locks into place to provide additional booster seat stability in a collision
  • Confirms that latches are locked with an audible “click”
  • Provides a secure connection even when booster seat is not occupied

Review of Safety 1st OnBoard 35 Air Infant Car Seat

My best friend just had a baby girl and honored me by making me God Mother. I couldn’t be more thrilled!!! As God Mother and a CPST, It was my duty and pleasure to make sure the baby was traveling safely and I installed the car seat 2 weeks prior to her arrival.

We have installed hundreds of car seats over the years. Baby Bodyguards is known to be big fans of Britax and the Graco Snugride. My friend had received the Safety 1st OnBoard Air Infant Seat as a gift and it was my first time installing one of those bad boys. I have to admit I had my doubts about liking the seat. I have never really been a big fan of Safety 1st products and was skeptic of the new “air protect” technology. Needless to say I am a big girl and can admit when I am wrong. I happened to really like the seat. It’s good quality, easy to install and lightweight.

Other awesome features include:
Rear-facing 4-35 pounds and up to 32″ in height
Featuring Air Protect®™ revolutionary side impact technology which immediately reduces side impact forces through the precise release of air – LEARN MORE
Extended use from a tiny 4 to a full 35 pounds
17% more leg room than most infant car seats
Customizable insert and low harness slots make the seat ideal for preemies and adjustable for growing babies
Carry Curve™ Handle features ergonomic design
Base Belt Lock easily secures your vehicle seat belt during installation
One Click LATCH installation system

Have You Heard of the Tummy Tub?

our 4 month old daughter
our 4 month old daughter

A few months ago I got my hands on a  Tummy Tub. It kind of  looks like a big punch bowl, except it is a baby bath which is supposedly good from birth to 3 years.

According to their site, “The Tummy Tub is designed to replicate the comfort of the mother’s womb and once in the Tummy Tub, babies naturally adopt the fetal position and instantly feel reassured and relaxed. Created in Holland, the Tummy Tub has been endorsed by maternity hospitals, physicians, midwives throughout Europe.”

I have to admit that I wasn’t so impressed with the looks of the Tub, and kept it in storage until our daughter seemed sturdy enough to use it. She is a real peanut, and only 11 lbs at 4 months. My whole opinion changed the minute I put our 4 month old in the tub. She was so… happy, calm and so… darn cute.

The other day, our daughter was so unhappy. She is teething and miserable, and nothing could calm her down. I decided to try the Tummy Tub again, and the minute we immersed her, she stopped crying and was comfortable.

This Tub is definitely worth the $40 it retails for.

The Coolest Baby Product of 2010…The mamaRoo!!!

IMG_0682I just received our mamaRoo, made by 4moms. I have been anxiously awaiting it’s arrival for weeks, and it was worth it. Last night when my 3 week old was up from 4am to 6am, I kept thinking, when is my mamaRoo going to arrive. HOORAY!!IMG_0681

This is the COOLEST most AMAZING product I have ever seen for babies. It’s not a swing or a bouncer, it is a futuristic “baby spacecraft” that moves like mom. It has 5 unique motions: car ride, kangaroo, tree swing, rock-a bye, and ocean wave. Our daughter loves the car ride, and I love not actually having to be out in the middle of the night driving around a colicky baby. Each motion can be adjusted to the right speed for your baby. The mamaRoo also comes with 5 sounds of nature, but what I love most is that you can connect your MP3 player to it .

If exposing baby to wonderful music isn’t enough, the mamaRoo also comes with Plush toy balls decorated in the style of Van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat. Black and white on one side for infants. Color on the other side for older babies. They easily pop in and out of the mobile so babies can chew and or study them.

This is a must have for every new parent. It’s worth the splurge at $200. It is a reasonable price considering you can take that swing and bouncer off your registry.

New Baby New Breastpump

hygeia-enjoye-extIMG_0495Our new Baby Bodyguards’s baby was born on April 19th 9:40 pm. After spending the day at a children’s carnival with our son, I went to take a nap, and POP! my water broke. Off to the hospital we went, and 31 hours, 3 pushes later, out little girl was born.

I researched breastpumps before the birth, because I used the Medela Pump in Style, with our first baby, and although it worked just fine in the beginning, I felt it fizzled out after a while and after calling the hotline and replacing all the membranes, and tubing etc, still no luck. I was kind of dismayed to then realize it only had a 1 year warranty.

I wanted to try something new, and that is when I came across Enjoye by Hygeia. I contacted them and they sent me a pump to test out for this blog post.

The Enjoye is a hospital grade pump and  has some pretty cool and unique features such as:

  • Proven performance for working moms with long-term and frequent pumping needs. Plus, your satisfaction is guaranteed
  • Usually more affordable than other rental pumps
  • More portable and convenient than other rental pumps
  • Features the unique Hygeia CARE Button for Customized, Audio, Recording, Experience so you can record your baby or other sound to enhance your breastpumping experience
  • Offers single or double pumping flexibility
  • Electric or battery operation with the included internal battery pack. The rechargeable battery is ideal for battery-dependent pumpers
  • Green Breastpump, Can be shared by multiple mothers when each has her own personal accessory set
  • Recycle the EnJoye when you no longer need it. See recycling instructions.
  • Mimics your baby’s unique suckling patterns with customizable speed and pressure controls
  • Safe, because all parts that come into contact with breastmilk are
    BPA/DEHP Free

I was very pleased to learn about Hygeia’s 3 year warranty. That is one of the longest in the industry.

I have used the Enjoye twice so far, and so far so good. I am able to get just as much milk as with the Pump in Style in it’s glory days, but find the suction action to be a lot more comfortable and similar to my babies feeding pattern.

The Enjoye is also very reasonable priced, between $219 and $299, and very lightweight.

I have only used this pump twice, but it is off to an awesome start. I will be updating again to let you all know how this pans out.

Spring Cleaning/Nesting

Sun_Earth_OnlineSo I am 37 weeks pregnant and going insane with the to-do list in my head. Every time I wake up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, I come up with another task to add to my list (actually, usually Fred’s list). When I was nesting before the birth of our first child, I had so….. much more time. I must have washed his layette three times before he actually wore anything.

This weekend’s to-do list consisted of washing all of our soon to be daughter’s newborn and 0-3 month clothing, along with getting the cradle and swing out of the basement and cleaning off all the dust and debris from the construction we had done earlier in the year. What made these tasks all the more fun, was that I was going to get to experiment with a new product line I had heard so much about Sun & Earth.

Sun and Earth makes safe, natural and non-toxic cleaning products.  All of their laundry products and cleaning products are free of petroleum based cleaners, chlorine, phosphates, dyes and perfumes that leave behind residue that could be harmful to your family, children and pet’s health.

I washed the layette using their Free and Clear Unscented Laundry Detergent. It did a great job. I happen to be one that loves scents, so then I did the rest of the family’s laundry using Sun & Earth 2x Concentrated Laundry Detergent. I am now obsessed with the stuff. It has the most delightful citrus scent derived from orange oil. The laundry came out with just a subtle hint of citris. It’s FANTASTIC!!!!! I then proceeded his to wash every linen in the house, just for more of this orange essence.

I then moved on to cleaning the dust and debris (When I say I , I mean Fred, I observed) off the cradle and swing using Sun & Earth All Purpose Spray Cleaner. It has the same wonderful orange scent and cleaned better than any major natural brands I have ever used minus the harsh chemicals. With a price tag of $4, how can you go wrong.

All of Sun & Earth’s products can be purchased on their website, and are less money than most national brands. Trust me, it is worth a try, you will become a Sun & Earth junkie like me, and save some money too.
