Clean George, All Natural and Alcohol Free Hand Purifier

Fall is in the air today. It’s my favorite of the seasons, but with Fall, also comes Flu, Colds, etc. I have been known to carry antibacterial hand sanitizer in my diaper bag. I am not proud of it, but after a subway ride, if there is no sink in sight, I sanitize.

The problem with antibacterial hand sanitizers is that they may lead to “super germs” and make us more sick. Sanitizers containing alcohol kill bad bacteria, but kill they good stuff too. What is a mom to do?

I then came across the Clean George website. Clean George makes hand purifiers that are alcohol free, contain no synthetic antibacterials, and no chemicals. Best of all, this stuff actually moisturizes. I can actually use this stuff on my son’s hands and not worry about him ingesting yucky chemicals.

Clean George comes in three scents Lavin lavender, and Grapefruit n’ Sage, which we love!!! and Mint-alyptus, which is nice, but in my opinion not as awesome as the other two. At $9.99 a bottle, try them all and see what scent works for you.

Goodbye Alcohol. Triclosan, and Benzalkonium and HELLO CLEAN GEORGE…..

Cleaning Green With BabyGanics

I was thrilled when my package of BabyGanics products arrived at my door. I had reviewed some of their products last year, and raved about them. They recently changed their look, and have added some new products to their line of goodies and I couldne’t wait to check them out.

I was able to test drive the Dish Dazzler and the fragrance free All Purpose Cleaner aka Grime Fighter. I was impressed by both products, but that didn’t surprise me. The Dish Dazzler, cleaned my dishes and wasn’t rough on my hands like other dish soaps, so often are. Grime Fighter, cleaned all the dried oatmeal from my two year old’s breakfast on my kitchen table in a jiffy, and didn’t leave behind any residue.

I trust BabyGanics, a company created by two clean-freak dads who wanted to create cleaning products that were safe for our babies and our planet.

BabyGanics, is ultra affordable, at around $6 a product, and is available at big stores like Babies R Us, Cosco and Buy Buy Baby, as well as many others.

Giggle Bug Toddler Tracker

The other day while at the park with my family, there was a little boy about 3 years old, standing with two policemen. The boy was lost, and the police were looking all around the park for a panicking parent. Sadly, they couldn’t find anyone, and the boy was taken to the precinct.Fred and I were horrified. We couldn’t even imagine what we would do if we lost sight of our son.

A while ago, I was looking for interesting products to review and I came across the Giggle Bug Tracker. It is a cute clip-on lady bug with a handheld device for an adult. To find a missing child, the adult triggers the Giggle Bug by pressing the button on the hand-held unit. The Giggle Bug will emit a loud, distinctive but child-friendly “beep” until the child is located and the adult resets the unit. The Giggle Bug range is 75-100 feet indoors and 100 + feet outdoors. Range varies based on environment and obstructions.

I have to be honest. I really love the idea of this product, but it was shipped to me not working. I bet it only needs a new battery, which I will get around to getting one of these days. It sells for $19.95 for 2, which is very reasonable. The complaint with the older version was that it didn’t beep loud enough. I was assured by the maker that the new version is much louder.

2009 Safer Sunscreen List

Most of you already know that I am a HUGE fan of Safe Mama (, The SafeMama reviews tons of shampoos, bug sprays, sunblocks etc, and compile lists of the best of the best using very strict criteria.

It’s that time of year again, and all of us mamas need to add the sunblock to out diaper bags for daily use. I wanted to share the 2009 SafeMama’s Sunscreen Showdown.

My diaper bag is stocked with JASON Cosmetics Chemical Free Sunblock. I not only use this for my son, but for myself too, and have been very happy with it the last 2 years.   It can be found in health food stores for $14.

New Approach to Prenatal Supplements

Fred and I have started toying with the idea to add a new addition to our family. Unfortunately, I was plagued with terrible nausea from the day after conception till about 4 months in, and taking my prenatal vitamins felt like a cruel punishment to my already sensitive stomach. So I set out on a search to find a prenatal supplement that I could tolerate and would provide the necessary folic acid, omega-3 fish oils and vitamin D that are recommended by my OBGYN.

During my bout with morning sickness, the only way that I could get out of bed in the morning was to chew a ginger candy. Ginger does wonders for nausea! I came across a chewable prenatal supplement by Bloomen Nutrition, that tastes just like the ginger candy I used to chew and has all the essential nutrients to nourish a developing baby. A months supply costs $15, and you can order it online. They can also send you a free sample first to see if you like it. Trust me you will.

ShiShu blanket in Lemon
ShiShu blanket in Lemon

Yay, I’m super excited about this giveaway, because this is the NICEST baby blanket, I have felt, seen cuddled up with etc.

If you are anything like me, you are no a fan of the microfiber/polyester blend baby blankets given by so many at your shower. It never bothered me, nor did I give it much thought, until my little baby started getting rashes that ceased when I tossed the poly blend blankies. The same thing happened to the founder of ShiShu Style, which is why she was inspired to create a baby blanket made ONLY of natural fibers

While researching natural fibers, ShiShu founder, discovered that Bamboo is antibacterial, soft as silk, and keeps you cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.

All of the ShiShu baby blankets are handwoven, and 60% cotton and 40% bamboo blend, with 100% bamboo seam trim.

I hope you are the lucky winner, but if not, I highly suggest getting one of these blankets for your little one and the next shower you attend. They make a thoughtful, and classy gift.

one lucky winner will get a ShiShu baby blanket in Lemon.

The Green-Pan, A Solution to Safer Cooking and a Healthy Planet

I received a full set of Teflon pots and pans when I got married a few years ago. We cook everyday and I started noticing pieces of the Teflon coating coming off. I immediately threw my pots and pans to the wind, because it doesn’t take a scientist to infer that eating Teflon is probably a bad idea.

Lauren Sucher, of the Environmental Working Group, a Washington, D. C., organization that compiles data on toxicology, recommends that people phase out the use of Teflon cookware in their home. Chemicals used in Teflon have been shown to be lethal to birds, and cause flu-like symptoms in humans. In 2005, the EPA said a chemical (PFOA) used to make Teflon is “likely a carcinogen” and in January 2006, DuPont, the only company that manufactures the chemical in the US, agreed to eliminate releases of the chemical from its manufacturing plants by 2015.

Stainless steel is a great alternative, but I don’t have the time or elbow grease needed to be scrubbing those bad boys. After a lot of research, I came across the Green-Pan and I had to try it.

Green-Pan is the first Teflon free non-stick pan. Using something called Thermolon technology, they’ve made a non-stick mineral coating that is food-safe, and won’t be damaged or emit nasty fumes, even at super high temperatures. It can resist heat up to 850 degrees, and you never need to use butter or oil to coat the pan, which is great for he waistline. I have used it several times and nothing sticks to it! It also doesn’t hurt that their cookware is attractive and affordable.

Calendula Works Miracles!

Calendula/Marigold Flower
Calendula/Marigold Flower

For the last 6 months, my angelic faced two year old has had an unsightly rash on his right cheek. At first I thought that maybe he was drooling at night, and his cheek was getting chapped, then we all thought it was eczema, windburn, it has been one unsolvable mystery.

I showed the rash to his Pediatrician, and she said “If it isn’t bothering him, don’t bother it.” She suggested using Neosporin , which we did to no avail. My mom suggested Calemine Lotion, which seemed like it was working for a few days, but it was just the pink tint of the cream fooling our eyes.

Last week, my aunt was over. She has been an ER for over 30 years who has recently gottn into holistic remedies. She took one look at his cheek and said to try Calendula. I immediately rushed to the local Health Food store, and bought Weleda Calendula Face Cream, for $9. In 3 days his rash is completely gone.

Calendula is also known as Marigold. How funny that those yellow and orange flowers we see planted all over the neighborhood are magic for the skin. The Calendula plant is comprised of carotenoids, flavonoids and essential oils. This gentle and nourishing botanical possesses powerful healing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Is Your Trash Can Safe for Your Toddler?

Most of our clients know that the kitchen poses many risks for children. Between the stove, the under the sink cabinet usually full of cleaning agents, and sharp knives in the drawer, it is no wonder that the kitchen tops our list of dangerous rooms in the house. What we have noticed, is that a lot of the homes we visit have garbage cans which pose a serious risk to young children.

Last week a dear friend of mine told me of his most recent Emergency Room visit. His 22 month old daughter, stuck her little hand into the recycling can and cut herself badly on the sharp edge of an aluminium can. She needed 8 stitches. He said it happened in a second, and it was the first time she had ever shown any interest in the can.

I have a child safe can in my house, but what I was surprised about, is if you do an Internet search for a child friendly garbage can, not many results come up. If you search a dog friendly can, or a can to keep raccoons out, you get pages and pages of suggestions.

One of the best cans on the market is the Superhuman Slim Plastic Can. You step on a pedal to open it, and it has a sliding lock which keeps the lid shut for safety. If this can doesn’t work with your decor , there are others on the market, just make sure it has a lid lock.

Healthy Hydration For Moms and Moms to Be Behold GLOW MAMA

So, I wrote about my recently found Twitter addiction. It is a great way to network, and I am meeting moms around the globe who are also passionate about keeping children safe and healthy and products designed for that purpose.

I came across Glow Mama, a great tasting drink designed for and by moms and moms to be. During my pregnancy, I had such a difficult time giving up my Diet Coke and iced coffee, had I known about Glow Mama, I would have had an easier time.

My son, with 101 fever, glad he is staying hydrated

Glow Mama has many of the important vitamins, minerals and fiber (4 grams great for preggo constipation) needed during this special time. As soon as I opened up a bottle to taste Glow Mama, my two year old grabbed it out of my hand and started chugging it. I looked at the ingredients and breathed a sigh of relief, because it is so healthy, I was glad he was enjoying it so much. It is quite refreshing and I chugged the other bottle. At only 70 calories per bottle, I had nothing to feel guilty about.

The website, has great Mocktail recipes, that I think would make any baby shower a lot of fun. They also have cool gift packs such as the Mocktail Gift Pack, The Eco Gift Pack, and functional packages, such as the One Week Sampler. At less than $15, it is a steal!

Now, if only Glow Mama comes up with an equally cool drink for toddlers!
