With the holidays right around the corner, you may be wondering if you have to give up on decorating now that you have a baby. I wanted to share some products we found that will keep your home looking as festive as ever, and your baby safe at the same time.
Check out these vintage ornaments on Etsy. They are unbreakable and you don’t have to worry about your little one choking on any small pieces.
Love the glow of candlelight? Now you don’t have to worry about blowing out the flame, or baby getting burned. Baby Bodyguards loves these Flamesless LED Candles from Pier 1. Just pop in batteries and you have the look and effect of flickering candles.
Once you have the pitter patter of little feet running around, you need to take down the tablecloth. We can’t tell you how many devastating stories we have heard about toddlers getting scalded by soup, coffee, etc. Instead of a festive tablecoth, try a table runner. We like this one from Pottery Barn
We will be updating this with more holiday safety tips after Thanksgiving
I had to post our latest testimonial. I never do this, we don’t even have a testimonial page, but I am so proud of this latest one that I had to share.
We had am amazing experience with Baby Bodyguards. As director of Pediatric
Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, I see what can happen as a
result of having your child in an unsafe environment. My wife and I had a
baby 3 months ago, so we decided to see what Baby Bodyguards had to offer.
The results, I must say, were somewhat humbling. I learned a lot about
home safety and I’m supposed to be the expert! Fred was a wealth of
knowledge and made a variety of suggestions that were obviously no brainers
to protect our child. In fact, he gave advice that went beyond our
immediate safety concerns in a non threatening and friendly way. It was
also obvious that he wasn’t just trying to sell us things, but rather
letting us know what he thought was crucial vs what could wait until later.
All in all, we had a great experience and I would highly recommend Baby
Bodyguards to new parents. My daughter Sloan is certainly safer as a
result. Thanks Baby Bodyguards!!

For years I have lived a double life, NYC prosecutor (Deputy Bureau Chief) by day, wife, mom and Baby Bodyguards Founder by night, weekends and every spare moment in between. It became very difficult for me to balance everything and nurture both lives to the full extent they both deserved, so I did what needed to be done. After 6 years working for the city I quit. When I share this information with people they look horrified. They can’t understand how in the worst economy in decades, I left a stable, comfortable job with amazing benefits for the wacky, topsy turvy, roller coaster of being an entrepreneur (full time).
I took a leap of faith and am happier than I have been in years. I am so proud of what Baby Bodyguards has been able to accomplish over the past 4 years. We have baby proofed over 1000 homes in the NYC area, and met some of the most fascinating people whom we are now lucky enough to call friends.I now spend my days visiting doctors offices, holding lectures, installing car seats, testing products, consulting with architects, it’s bliss. Best of all, I can cook breakfast and dinner for my family and work from home when I need to.
I guess I’m sharing this because it was a very scary decision to make. So many of you have let me into your homes, and your lives and so many of the moms I meet on a daily basis are faced with the dilemma of trading in their corporate identity and 80 hour work weeks for the unknown. I still have over $100,000 of law school loans to pay back, but at the end of the day I call my own shots. I put all my eggs in MY basket, and I think it is the safest bet. In these crazy times the only thing I can bank on is my determination, and passion for what I’m doing, keeping babies safe and being around for my own kids.
I’d love to hear about other moms that threw caution to the wind and the outcome. Email me at Courtney@babybodyguards.com
My best friend just had a baby girl and honored me by making me God Mother. I couldn’t be more thrilled!!! As God Mother and a CPST, It was my duty and pleasure to make sure the baby was traveling safely and I installed the car seat 2 weeks prior to her arrival.
We have installed hundreds of car seats over the years. Baby Bodyguards is known to be big fans of Britax and the Graco Snugride. My friend had received the Safety 1st OnBoard Air Infant Seat as a gift and it was my first time installing one of those bad boys. I have to admit I had my doubts about liking the seat. I have never really been a big fan of Safety 1st products and was skeptic of the new “air protect” technology. Needless to say I am a big girl and can admit when I am wrong. I happened to really like the seat. It’s good quality, easy to install and lightweight.
Other awesome features include:
Rear-facing 4-35 pounds and up to 32″ in height
Featuring Air Protect®™ revolutionary side impact technology which immediately reduces side impact forces through the precise release of air – LEARN MORE
Extended use from a tiny 4 to a full 35 pounds
17% more leg room than most infant car seats
Customizable insert and low harness slots make the seat ideal for preemies and adjustable for growing babies
Carry Curve™ Handle features ergonomic design
Base Belt Lock easily secures your vehicle seat belt during installation
One Click LATCH installation system
Last Sunday Baby Bodyguards was at the first ever Brooklyn Baby Expo and it was amazing. Karen from A Child Grows in Brooklyn, put it together so we knew it would be.
Britax was kind enough to bring us a demo rig so Fred, who is a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, could demonstrate the proper way to install a car seat. They even gave us a Britax Boulevard 70 to raffle off! It’s an awesome seat, very safe and comfy, but BIG!
It was wonderful seeing a lot of our past clients and meeting lots of expecting couples and answering their baby safety questions.
For those of you that missed it this year, it’s a must for next!
There has been a recall of the Britax Chaperone Infant Seat, models E9L69N9, E9L69P3, & EL69P5 made 4/09-5/10. The problem is with the chest clip. It is brittle and may break causing sharp edges and choking hazard. Call 888-427-4829 for instructions and a new chest clip. If chest clip is broken, remove chest clip and any fragments and discontinue use of seat until replacement clip is installed.
When we teach our clients to how to install their car seats we always urge caregivers to register the seat with the manufacturer so that they can be notified of any recalls. Recalls for small numbers of seats often don’t get a lot of media coverage. The only way you can be sure to know if there is a recall is to register with the manufacturer. Most manufacturers now allow you to register online and it only takes a minute.
Happy New Year! Follow us on Facebook, for the latest updates and recalls.
Once again, thank you for your continued support, business and referrals.
A few months ago I got my hands on a Tummy Tub. It kind of looks like a big punch bowl, except it is a baby bath which is supposedly good from birth to 3 years.
According to their site, “The Tummy Tub is designed to replicate the comfort of the mother’s womb and once in the Tummy Tub, babies naturally adopt the fetal position and instantly feel reassured and relaxed. Created in Holland, the Tummy Tub has been endorsed by maternity hospitals, physicians, midwives throughout Europe.”
I have to admit that I wasn’t so impressed with the looks of the Tub, and kept it in storage until our daughter seemed sturdy enough to use it. She is a real peanut, and only 11 lbs at 4 months. My whole opinion changed the minute I put our 4 month old in the tub. She was so… happy, calm and so… darn cute.
The other day, our daughter was so unhappy. She is teething and miserable, and nothing could calm her down. I decided to try the Tummy Tub again, and the minute we immersed her, she stopped crying and was comfortable.
This Tub is definitely worth the $40 it retails for.
Last Summer I remember hearing about three toddlers in NYC who were killed when they were crushed by a television. Children love to climb and pull on things. Parents need to make sure that while they are babyproofing, that their TV’s, bookcases, dressers, appliances etc, are sturdy and that there is no chance of it tipping over.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) staff estimates that in 2006, 16,300 children 5 years old and younger were treated in emergency rooms because of injuries associated with TV, furniture, and appliance tip-overs, and between 2000 and 2006, CPSC staff received reports (pdf) of 134 tip-over related deaths. Additionally, CPSC staff is aware of at least 30 media reports of tip-over deaths since January 2007 involving this same age group.
To help prevent tip-over hazards, Baby Bodyguards offers the following safety tips:
Furniture should be stable on its own. For added security, anchor chests or dressers, TV stands, bookcases and entertainment units to the floor or attach them to a wall. The
The largest heaviest books should be placed on the bottom of a bookcase
Place TVs on a sturdy, low-rise base and anti-tip the TV. Avoid flimsy shelves.
Push the TV as far back as possible.
Place electrical cords out of a child’s reach, and teach kids not to play with them.
Keep remote controls and other attractive items off the TV stand so kids won’t be tempted to grab for them and risk knocking the TV over.
Make sure free-standing ranges and stoves are installed with anti-tip brackets. They are provided by the manufacturer
We at Baby Bodyguards care about your child’s safety. Please contact us if you have any questions about how to anti-tip on your own, or if you would like us to send a technician to do it for you.
I just received our mamaRoo, made by 4moms. I have been anxiously awaiting it’s arrival for weeks, and it was worth it. Last night when my 3 week old was up from 4am to 6am, I kept thinking, when is my mamaRoo going to arrive. HOORAY!!
This is the COOLEST most AMAZING product I have ever seen for babies. It’s not a swing or a bouncer, it is a futuristic “baby spacecraft” that moves like mom. It has 5 unique motions: car ride, kangaroo, tree swing, rock-a bye, and ocean wave. Our daughter loves the car ride, and I love not actually having to be out in the middle of the night driving around a colicky baby. Each motion can be adjusted to the right speed for your baby. The mamaRoo also comes with 5 sounds of nature, but what I love most is that you can connect your MP3 player to it .
If exposing baby to wonderful music isn’t enough, the mamaRoo also comes with Plush toy balls decorated in the style of Van Gogh, Monet, and Seurat. Black and white on one side for infants. Color on the other side for older babies. They easily pop in and out of the mobile so babies can chew and or study them.
This is a must have for every new parent. It’s worth the splurge at $200. It is a reasonable price considering you can take that swing and bouncer off your registry.
